If you want to use an applique, you need a special Granny Square that is dense, even and strong enough to support an applique (not too stretchy and not too many holes).
Here is the perfect Granny Square for any applique

If you use recommended yarn and hook, the size of Granny Square is 4 1/4 " ( 11 cm)
Abbreviations used: (US terms)
Sl St - slip stitch; Ch - Chain, SC - Single crochet; DC - Double Crochet
Materials Used:
Worsted weight yarn (#4) - i used Red heart Super Saver Solids
Crochet hook H-8 / 5.00 mm
Ch 3, join in a ring with a Sl St
(or create a Magic Loop):
Ch 2 (equals to DC 1)
Row 1: In the ring:
DC 2, Ch 2, DC 3, Ch 2
Continue Row 1:
DC 3, Ch 3, DC 3, Ch 2
Finish with a Sl St:
Row 1 is completed!
Row 2:
Ch 2 (= DC 1), DC 2,
Row 2 continued: Corner:
DC 2, Ch 2, DC 2
Row 2 continued: Side:
DC 3
Make 4 corners [DC 2, Ch 2, DC 2]
and
4 sides: [DC 3]
Finish with a Sl St
Row 2 is completed.
Row 3: Ch 2, DC 3,
Corner: [DC 2, Ch 2, DC 2]
and side: [DC 7]
Finish Row 3:
